Harvestworks and the Electronic Music Foundation (EMF) have come together to create an International Electronic and Digital Arts Center that will establish New York City as a global leader in technology-based music and sound art. This world-wide destination for audiences and artists alike will create a focal point for the rapidly growing international network of related institutions, create additional energy, and bring additional artists and programs to New York, furthering its reputation as the capital of world culture. Harvestworks and EMF are both established leaders in this world-wide field and offer distinct resources to this unique collaborative partnership.
Founded in 1977 to cultivate artistic talent using electronic technologies, Harvestworks' mission is to encourage the creation of and expand the dissemination of digital media artwork. From its central Soho location and through its internet presence Harvestworks provides accessible and coordinated digital media production, education, information and content distribution services to a diverse creative community. It serves a wide community of electronic music composers, interactive media designers, film and video makers, digital tool developers and computer programmers. By bringing together innovative practitioners from all branches of the digital arts, Harvestworks provides a vital context and catalyst for creativity in the digital arts.
EMF's mission is to explore the creative and cultural potential in the convergence of music, sound, technology, and science, and apply that toward the betterment of human life. EMF presents and commissions innovative work, publishes CDs and DVDs, supports research, develops collaborative projects with partners and contacts around the world, and maintains websites on the past and present of electronic music. EMF also contributes to the cultural vibrancy of New York City - and beyond - by regularly organizing concerts, festivals, symposia and conferences. Through a powerful internet presence and global outreach EMF acts as a beacon for the empowerment of individual creativity and the realization of new roles that music can play in the world.
Beckelman+Capalino has been engaged to comprehensively assess the physical, financial and organizational status of the Harvestworks and EMF with the goal of providing the tools they need to conduct a capital campaign and ultimately establish a permanent home in Lower Manhattan.
