Founded in 1976 by New York City Ballet principal dancer Jacques d’Amboise, National Dance Institute (“NDI”) has decided to establish a permanent home for its Center for Learning and the Arts in Harlem. Following the issuance of a Request for Proposals, NDI designated Beckelman+Capalino as its Project Manager. The firm assembled a team of experts to analyze NDI’s programmatic and space use requirements, evaluate its current and future operating budget needs, address the fund raising feasibility for both capital and endowment monies, and investigate a range of building sites and types that match NDI’s needs and resources. B+C completed this first phase of a vision and business plan, which included a recommendation regarding a second phase that called for refinement of the business plan, architectural renderings, site evaluation/test-fits, the launching of the quiet phase of a capital campaign, and conversations with elected officials. NDI is now in the midst of a third phase.
NDI has identified a location for its Center for Learning and the Arts in a 18,000 square foot space in the former PS-90 school, located at 148th/147th Street in Manhattan. This space will house dance studios, rehearsal space, and administrative offices. The anticipated opening date for this facility is June 2011. B+C is working with NDI as project managers to oversee the full scope of the project, from schematic design through construction management including all aspects of community relations advocacy and permitting for the building.
