Beckelman+Capalino have been engaged by the SS United States Conservancy to advance its master plan goals and national fundraising efforts to preserve and transform the SS United States into a self-sustaining, multipurpose waterfront attraction in a major American port city. The restored SS United States will include a museum dedicated to the ship’s historical legacy that will educate and inspire visitors through innovative treatment of maritime and American history themes.
The SS United States Conservancy, a national nonprofit based in Washington, D.C., is the owner and steward of the SS United States, the largest passenger ship ever built in America and holder of the record for the fastest Atlantic crossing by ship, which she set in 1952. The luxury liner and top-secret Cold War weapon served as the nation’s “Ship of State,” transporting four US Presidents, business moguls, movie stars, tourists, and immigrants during 17 years of service.
